Debbie Bedell - Clinic Host

District Administrator District 7 Oregon - I began volunteering for Little League in 1987 when my oldest son Doug started T-ball. In 1988 joined the Board of Pioneer Little League by showing up at a meeting and being voted onto the Board. I have held the following positions in SPLL:  Rep at Large, Treasurer, and President (5 years). In 2000 I was elected as DA for District 7 Oregon.

I was born here in Salem; I have been married since 1976 to Duane.  We were high school "sweethearts" since the end of our sophomore year.  After graduation I went immediately to beauty school. We had two boys, Arlin Douglas - 1981 (24) and Anthony David - 1985 (20). I have been a beautician for 29 years.  I also worked for the State Budget/Personnel Department for 10 years while the kids were born.  I started out inputting budgets and left as the Administrators Secretary.  I tried staying home for a year babysitting, but went back to being a beautician part-time and still continue.  Another gal and I opened our own beauty shop in 2004.

Something that people do not know is that I was and still am, involved in Eastern Star here in Salem.  I was Worthy Matron of Ainsworth Eastern Star in 1981 with my father.  I am not as active as I was since Little League takes most of our time.  My parents are both very active in Eastern Star, Nile and Masons.  My dad was part of the Masons (Most Worshipful Master) that helped raise money for the volunteer stadium in Williamsport.  They were always involved in everything that we kids did when we were growing up and it installed in us a very family oriented lifestyle - which still continues to this day.

I have a younger brother and sister and 2 nieces.  We are lucky my parents and his mom live here in Salem.  I only have my grandma still alive out of all of our grandparents and she lives in Hood River.

Umpiring in the great District 7 Oregon, I have been able to officiate in all levels for both baseball and softball. Honored with the opportunities to officiate in all levels of state tournaments in baseball, and in softball the Little League level. Having worked the baseball divisional levels of Junior, Senior and Big Leagues is a full career for some, yet I have been lucky enough to have done all of them. I have been an instructor at the regional school twice and the clinic director for the Northwest Outreach Clinic at OSU for the last four years. I was surprised and humbled in 2005 to receive the District 7 Staff volunteer of the year award. I have a great wife Lori who tolerates all of this officiating, and an adorable daughter Carissa, who is 1, what a great life!

I Started in Little League in 1997 as a major Manager for the Yankees, doing the field maintenance, majors coordinator, and umpire. Realizing that I could do only one job well I decided to umpire. In 1997 I started umpiring I have been devoted to this hobby even since. I am the president of the Linn Benton Umpire Association, which started by umpires that wanted a more comprehensive program than just servicing one league. I have attended the umpire school in San Bernardino, and the outreach clinic in the Dallas Oregon. I have instructed at the school in San Bernardino. I requested District 7 Administrator Debbie Bedell to allow an umpire training program to be developed for the NorthWest. With approval in 2001 I started the development of the outreach clinic for the northwest. I have officiated in many local leagues to include Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, California and Pennsylvania. I also have officiated high school, Jr. College, Cal Ripken, Junior Baseball of Oregon, ASA and USSSA programs to include some of their national tournaments.

Harrison Cole, Jr. - I am Married to Maria L. (Lucy) Cole this May 3rd will be 24 years. I have 3 great kids, Richard 23, Robin 21 and Jonathon 20. All three are presently working and attending college. They all have played within the Little League organization as have I from major to Big League Level. I helped at practice with my sons and was a coach with my daughter. Depending on the time of the games when they all played on the same night Lucy and I would rotate towards the latest game.

What got me into umpiring happened in 1980, when a friend had asked me to come out and help him run a two man crew. (the only experience I recall having was watching the game on TV). He failed to tell me that he was planning to let me work the plate (ha! ha!). We both survived this initiation and I offered to do more games. Time goes on over the next few years as I meet more and more brothers of the third team. I survived with basic understanding of the game until 1994, when I attended the Western Region Weeklong School. This training is what I whished I had years earlier. I am proud to say "YES" I did learn a lot from that one week. This helped turn my whole out look on how games are supposed to be run. I did well enough to earn the 'Bob Thornton' Outstanding student award. We are now in year 2004 and the learning is still Western Region Week Long School 1996 to present, Weekend Mechanics 1996 to present, and Chief Umpire School 2000 to present. Other experiences are conducting my district,  District 24 umpire/rules training for the leagues and district umpires. I have worked with the outreach program going to Livermore and Visalia Ca. and worked with a section of District 51 in the high desert. There has been many continued friendships and new hound ones in all the years associated with Little League. I have enjoyed every moment.

1990 Big League Softball Regional, Denver CO; 1991 Little League Softball Regional Pinole Hercules, Ca.; 1991 Senior Softball Regional, Pinole Hercules Ca.; 1991 Big League Softball World Series, Mesa AZ.; 1992 Big League Baseball Regional, Riverside CA; 1994 Senior League Baseball Regional, Sacramento Ca.; 1996 Junior League regional Phoenix AZ.; 1998 Little League Baseball Regional, San Bernardino CA.; 1999 junior League Softball Regional Moreno Valley, CA.

Wife-Linda Children-Scott and Mark Granddaughter-Zoe

Jamie Sims - I have been married to my wife Cheryl for almost 23 years.  We have to wonderful children - Krystal, age 20 and Zach, 16.  Both of them grew up playing ball in MurrayHill LL in Beaverton, Oregon.  I have been employed by PacifiCorp (an electric utility) since January of 1985 where I am currently a Sr. Contract Administrator.

Our first involvement with LL was in 1994 when I showed up for a spring team meeting and was awarded the managerial job of my 9-year-old daughter's softball team even though I had not applied for any such position.  I knew very little about fast-pitch softball and less about managing girls.  It only took one year for me to realize that this was not where my strengths were.  Several years later, there was a call to the stands for an umpire or else there would be no game.  After 10 years of men's slo-pitch, I figured I knew just enough to be dangerous, so I put on the catcher's back-up gear (designed for a 12 year-old) and got behind the plate with a girl throwing 50 mph.  Fortunately my daughter was a good catcher, so my bruises were minimal.  Somebody liked what they saw and soon I was getting calls to do more games.

2002 was the first year that I attended the WR Umpire School in San Bernardino.  It didn't take long to realize how much I didn't know.  The school made such a positive difference in my on-field skills that I was soon added to the Oregon District 4 staff as an umpire consultant.  Since that time I have been responsible for umpire training throughout District 4 and have been UIC for baseball in MurrayHill LL.  I have had the pleasure to work in a number of district, state and divisional tournaments at various levels of play.

Career Highlights:
2002 - Attended WR Umpire school in San Bernardino for the first time
2003 - Worked Big League Softball Regional in Palmdale, CA
2004 - Attended NW Region Umpire Clinic
2005 - Attended WR Umpire School, Asst Instructor at NW Region Umpire Clinic, Worked Senior Softball Regional in Missoula, MT
2006 - Instructor at WR Umpire School, Instructor at NW Region Umpire Clinic
Pat Ryan

Volunteer Career:

Got started umpiring Little League in 1993 by checking off a box on kids’ registration form asking for volunteers.  How tough could it be to umpire Little League?  It sounded like more fun than field maintenance or working the concession stand.  Board of Directors member for local league since 1994.  Umpire-in-Chief for local league since 1996.  District Umpire Consultant since 1996.  Graduate of the Western Region umpire school in 1996.  Instructor at the Western Region umpire school from 1997 through 2004.  Assistant District Administrator (ADA) for 9-10 Baseball 1997-99.  ADA for Softball 2000.  Umpire all divisions of baseball and softball.  Umpired the Western Region Senior Girls Softball tournament in 1998 and 1999 and the Senior Girls Softball World Series in 2001.  Umpired the Western Region Little League Baseball tournament in 2004.

Personal:

Married to wife Malinda for 27 years.  Have 7 children (4 girls and 3 boys) ranging in age from 9 to 25 (Erin 25, Chrystal 23, Sean 21, Allison 19, Kerry 19, Matthew 10, and Tanner 9).  All of the children played Little League baseball or softball.  While playing Big League Baseball the eldest son, Sean, had the opportunity to play on the Allstar team which won the Washington State championship two of the three years he played.
